Your Council on Aging OffersSenior CenterThe focal point of senior activity is the Senior Center, located in the lower level of the Memorial Building at 900 Main Street across from the Millis Police & Fire Station on Route 109. The Millis Senior Center is open Monday through Friday, 8:30 A.M. until 1:00 P.M., with occasional afternoon and evening programs as well.
Social ActivitiesThere are a multitude of regularly scheduled activities for the enjoyment and enrichment of our senior citizens. Stop by the Center to take part in a friendly game of Scrabble, Cribbage, or Bingo. Share your talents with our group of knitters who donate their time knitting caps, mittens and blankets for the needy. Take part in our popular Tuesday afternoon exercise program. Learn to paint, use computers or enjoy the various guest speakers that visit the Senior Center each month. There is always a smiling face here at our center to welcome you.
Social Day CareOur respite program, under the supervision of Patty Quinlan, provides health monitoring and social activities on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from 8:30 A.M. until 1:00 P.M. for seniors experiencing cognitive difficulties or are isolated and would benefit from a social setting. A fee of $35 per day includes transportation, a nutritious lunch, snacks, and various crafts and activities. The program is by referral only. For more information call the Senior Center at 376-7051.
OutreachOur outreach coordinator, Carol LaFreniere, is available to assist senior citizens (home-bound or not) and their families with elderly related concerns. Carol is available Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm to assist with personal issues and to make referrals where necessary.
NutritionThrough Federal and State funding grants administered by HESSCO, the Area Agency on Aging, a noon-time meal is offered at the Senior Center Monday through Friday. The meal program provides good nutrition and an opportunity for socializing. Home delivered meals are available for those who qualify. Contact the Senior Center at 376-7051 for reservations. Two day prior notice is required to order and cancel. Suggested meal donation is $2.50.
Health ServicesIn support of wellness, the center offers weekly blood pressure readings every Wednesday at 11:00 at the Senior Center. Blood sugar monitoring is also provided the first and third Tuesday of the month at 9:30. Vision, hearing, flu shots and other health information are available on a periodic basis with informative speakers.
TransportationScheduled transportation is available for Millis residents (60+ years) and any handicapped resident, Monday through Friday, 8:00 A.M. to 2:00 P.M. We are also available for medical appointments, including Boston, until 5 P.M. We urge you to schedule your transportaion needs at least a week in advance. Suggested donations: $1 each way locally; $5 round trip to Natick, Bellingham, Norwood, Milford, Newton....and $25 round trip, plus tolls and parking for Boston.
CommunicationInformative articles and schedule of events appear in the Country Gazette, The Milford Daily News, the MetroWest Daily News, and on Local Cable TV (Channel 11). Our monthly newsletter, "COAlition" is mailed to every Millis senior, distributed to town offices, the library and local business establishments.
