Permit Stickers: Each registered passenger vehicle that uses the Transfer Station must display a Transfer Station sticker on the inside driver’s side of the windshield. Stickers are renewed annually and expire June 30th. Residential stickers are available at:

In order to purchase a sticker, residents must bring their motor vehicle registration. Residents whose automobile registrations show addresses other than Millis (leased vehicle/new residents) must provide evidence of residency.

Recycling:        Only works if done properly!
 
Paper: All recyclable paper items including newspaper, magazines/catalogs, cardboard (flattened and cut into no larger than 2’ x 2’ pieces), junk mail, but excluding paper napkins, tissues and paper hand towels. No cat papers.
 
Co-mingled Materials: Includes all rinsed plastic jars, bottles and tubs numbered 1 through 7; unbroken, rinsed glass bottles and jars; steel/aluminum cans/foil. Materials not accepted include plastic containers previously used for motor oil or other chemicals; plastic bags; paper products which have been contaminated with food residue; pizza boxes; egg cartons; aerosol cans; light bulbs; window glass; ceramic dishes; mirrors.
 
Scrap Metal: Metal chairs; storm doors; bicycles, etc. Non-metallic parts should be removed. No freon-containing items such as air conditioners and refrigerators. No Propane tanks.
 
Books: Old books may be deposited in the appropriate bin.
 
Returnable Bottles and Cans: The Millis Lions Club maintains bins at the Transfer Station for collection of all returnable bottles and cans. The Lions Club, in turn, utilizes the redemption fees collected to sponsor programs that benefit all Millis citizens. Some of the Club’s activities include providing college scholarships, sponsoring youth sport teams, sponsoring eye-mobiles, funding for Council on Aging van, furnishing equipment for the ambulance, public library and much more.
 
            Leaves should be raked into bags at home; bags emptied into the compost pile and bags taken home.
 
            Brush and tree branches less than two inches in diameter shall be deposited in the designated area. Brush should be cut into lengths not exceeding eight feet. No logs. No commercial brush and leaves will be accepted at the Transfer Station.
 
            Waste Oil: Presently there are no provisions for disposing of waste oil. Keep receipts and return waste oil where it was purchased.
 
Tires may be disposed of at Millis Used Auto, 1465 Main Street, for a fee. Millis Used Auto is open from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
 
            Batteries – Rechargeable Nickel-Cadmium (used for camcorders, cell phones, etc.) & household batteries are recycled at the Transfer Station. Automobile batteries may be taken to Millis Used Auto at no charge.
 
            Clothing: Old clothing may be deposited in the appropriate bin.
 
            Items containing CFC (Freon), such as air conditioners, refrigerators and freezers may be taken to Millis Used Auto. There is a recycling charge per item payable to Millis Used Auto.
 
            Computers,Monitors, Televisions, Stereo Equipment, and Microwave Ovens – Are accepted at the Transfer Station for recycling at a rate of $40.00 each. Limit 2 per Transfer Station sticker per day. Fees must be paid in advance at DPW office.
 
            Large items:  The disposal fee for large items - washing machines, dryers, stoves, mattresses, couches, stuffed chairs, etc. is $40.00 per item and must be paid in advance at the DPW Office
(376-5424), Monday through Friday.
 
Blue Bags: All refuse not recycled must be placed in the specially marked Town of Millis blue bags, which are available for $1.65 each at the Customer Service area at Roche Bros. and Tedeschi’s in Millis and placed in the refuse trailer at the Transfer Station.
 
Other Refuse: There is a fee of $.05 (five cents) per pound, with a minimum of $40.00, to dispose of refuse not contained in the blue bags or not mentioned in the recycling section above. (All household waste must be in blue bags.)   The vehicle must be weighed empty at Millis Used Auto, weighed full at Millis Used Auto, and the certified weight slip must be presented and stamped at the DPW Office (Monday through Friday only), where payment is to be made prior to entering the Transfer Station.
 
Construction & Demolition materials, creosote-soaked timbers, sheetrock, shingles are NOT accepted. 
 
Propane tanks are NOT accepted. They may be taken to Millis Used Auto or other private vendors.
 
The Attendant in charge shall be obeyed by all users of the Transfer Station at all times, and materials must be deposited in accordance with his instructions or, in the absence of his specific instructions, as directed by signs. The Attendant in charge is authorized to require reasonable and satisfactory evidence concerning the origin of refuse contained in any vehicle, and he is further authorized, upon failure to satisfactorily establish the origin of refuse as being generated in Millis, to prohibit the use of the Transfer Station to the operator of said vehicle.
 
Whoever violates rules and regulations of the Transfer Station facility will be warned of possible suspension of his/her permit to use the facility as follows: first offense - written warning; second offense - hearing before the Board of Selectmen.
